Not too long ago, I removed my dreaded 2 iron and 3 iron from my arsenal. I was about 1 in 8 (or 9) to hit it flush and not have to use a wedge on my next shot. So I made up my mind to look for hybrids to replace the long irons.
I went to demo-days at my local range. They had about 15 different manufacturers all with the latest and greatest. I quickly decided to take my time and hit them all… what an eye opener!
I methodically started at one end of the range and worked my way down, noting which I hit the best and always trying to outperform it as I moved along. About an hour later, I was at the other end and had made three switches and narrowed my search to two club makers.
So I hit these two again and only one was undoubtedly the best I could hit. Frankly I was not missing… every shot seem to fly off the club. I even tried to intentionally miss-hit – I did get off line a bit, but the distance was better than anything else I had hit over the two-plus hours spent there.
So I noted the specs of the clubs the Adams A3 Hybrid
(graphite shaft) and went online to buy them (found a discount code for Austads – at end of the post).
And, I actually bought the 2, 3 and 4 hybrids and promptly removed my 4 iron from my bag as well. How did I improve? Well, now I seem to hit about 7-8 out of 10 (vs 1 in 8 with my irons) AND I seem to be getting these distances-
2 Hybrid – 225-235 yards
3 Hybrid – 210-225 yards
4 Hybrid – 195-205 yards
In short… I will take the improvement! So far, I dropped about 1.4 strokes off my index and I look forward to further improvement this season. I will post updates as the season continues.
Now for the code… I stumbled upon this as I was writing the post. Austad’s has a 10% off code
… not sure how long it will be valid, but here it is 25253 – just enter it in during checkout I believe. They do say some manufacturers are excluded, by I tested Adams and it seemed fine.
Post your improvements/comments on your hybrids… would love to hear about it.
